Israel Expands S. Lebanon Strikes Amid Rising Cross-Border Tensions

(MENAFN) According to reports, Israel carried out a series of air and artillery strikes across southern Lebanon on Saturday following evacuation warnings issued for more than a dozen locations, just a day after Israeli leadership stated that its forces had advanced deeper into Lebanese territory.

Lebanon’s army said a “targeted” Israeli strike wounded two soldiers in the south. The incident came shortly after military delegations from Israel and Lebanon held rare security discussions in Washington, described as a significant diplomatic development.

The talks in Washington preceded US-mediated negotiations expected early next week, marking the fourth round of discussions since the latest escalation in the Israel-Hezbollah conflict began.

Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency (NNA) reported multiple Israeli strikes across the south, including artillery fire near the medieval Beaufort Castle.

Lebanese Culture Minister Ghassan Salame warned that continued Israeli attacks are placing cultural and historical sites at serious risk.

According to reports, the Lebanese presidency said President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam agreed to intensify diplomatic efforts to halt what they described as ongoing Israeli military actions ahead of upcoming talks scheduled for June 2 and 3.

The presidency statement also highlighted escalating strikes across southern towns and villages, particularly in the Tyre and Nabatieh regions, alongside reported destruction of homes and historical landmarks.

Elbridge Colby, a senior US defense official, described recent military discussions between Lebanese and Israeli delegations as “productive,” though he did not indicate any progress toward a ceasefire, which remains a key Lebanese demand.

Lebanon’s military also reported that two of its soldiers were seriously injured after a vehicle was struck by what it described as a hostile Israeli drone near Nabatieh.

Although a ceasefire agreement was formally declared on April 17, according to reports, it has not been effectively implemented. Both Israel and Hezbollah continue to accuse each other of violations while justifying ongoing military actions as responses to breaches by the other side.
